George Washington University, Washington, DC- The GW College Republicans released the following statement: The G.W. College Republicans remain disappointed that ABC News has acted upon its plan to anchor their morning and evening shows live from the White House, focusing on President Obama’s health care reform proposal, without offering the Republican Party a similar platform. President Obama has called us to a spirited debate for bipartisan health care reform. However, by anchoring from the White House, and without including an organized Republican response, the ABC Network has turned over its programming to the promotion and advancement of the “Obamacare” liberal agenda. We continue to hope that the Obama Administration will not continue to exclude Republicans in such a manner as the debate continues this summer.

Statement On Nomination of Sonia Sotomayor

The George Washington University College Republicans congratulate Judge Sonia Sotomayor for taking a unique place in history as the first Hispanic, and fourth woman, nominated by a president to the U.S. Supreme Court. However, based on comments and decisions that Judge Sototmayor has made, we feel it is absolutely crucial that both Democrats and Republicans perform and exhaustive review of her record.

Sotomayor’s support of affirmative action in Ricci v. DeStefano, and her expressed belief in judicial activism and from-the-bench policy-making, are only a couple of the issues that we hope the Senate Judiciary Committee will examine before making any recommendation on her nomination.

Republicans will treat Judge Sotomayor fairly and on the merits of her nomination. It’s unfortunate that President Obama did not show that kind of respect toward Justice Alito when, as a senator, he chose to vote to filibuster Alito’s nomination.

We hope for a fair, thorough, and straightforward process that focuses on her record as a Judge, not her personal story or political philosophy.
