FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 22, 2011

GWU CR-CD Debate Will Now Feature Speaker Newt Gingrich and Howard Dean

Washington, DC — Due to unforeseen scheduling conflicts, Liz Cheney will be unable to attend the debate scheduled for February 1, 2011 at 7pm in Lisner Auditorium at The George Washington University. While both the College Democrats and College Republicans will miss Ms. Cheney’s contributions to a vigorous discussion, we are pleased to announce that former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich will debate former Governor Howard Dean.

Howard Dean and Newt Gingrich will be squaring-off in a wide-ranging discussion of current affairs and politics, staking out and defending their positions with the knowledge and perspective gained from tremendous careers as preeminent activists for their respective parties. Mr. Dean’s extensive experience in politics and policy includes service as the 79th Governor of Vermont, a 2004 presidential candidate, and the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Mr. Gingrich served as a member of the House of Representatives from Georgia for two decades, during which he led the GOP to its first majority in forty years and served as Speaker of the House.

With support from the GW Student Association and Program Board, the College Democrats and College Republicans are thrilled to host what is sure to be a superb and enlightening event. Tickets are available immediately from the Lisner box office or from the College Democrats and College Republicans at the time and place determined and announced by each organization.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 26, 2011

College Republican Statement on the 2011 SOTU and Republican Response
Washington, D.C. – – In a two-word response to last night’s State of the Union, The George Washington University College Republicans would simply say, “Paul Ryan.”

The two issues that drove the Republican victory this past election cycle rightfully highlighted the President’s speech: the economy and job creation. However it is difficult to take President Obama seriously on these issues when he goes 4,025 words before mentioning the mounting debt.

The President’s SOTU was deceiving to all Americans, but especially to our generation, the generation that carries the greatest burden of the national debt. The President spoke about a freeze in domestic spending, followed by all the increases in domestic spending he wants to see.

Rep. Paul Ryan, in his response offered the honest solutions to the problems the President outlined, but the answers were missing from the President’s speech. The Republican Congress has already voted to cut its own budget, pledges to lower taxes, offer reasonable regulations, and limit government. That’s the true way to create jobs. Not investments disguised as debt-increasing stimulus.

Rep. Paul Ryan’s outstanding response on behalf of the Republicans solidified the greater visionary differences between the two parties. It asked what do you want the role of government to be in your life? In the becoming of our own political age ask yourself, “should government be big and solve all your problems or does the individual have the ability to dictate their path to their prosperity?” This election cycle America chose the ladder, while last night President Obama proved why Republicans took the house last November.

Washington, D.C. — The George Washington University College Republicans are ecstatic over tonight’s Republican victories across the nation, at every level. The Republicans have taken back the House, 10 new Republican governors have been elected, 13 Republican senators and hundreds of Republican state legislators.

This victory is change we can really believe in. In fact, with the Republican pick up of 65 House seats, it’s the biggest wave of change since 1938. America has elected strong leaders like Senator-elect Mark Kirk, Representative-elect Allen West and Governor-elect John Kasich to solve the most pressing issues facing our generation. We need job creation, budget cuts, deficit control and immigration reform, and they have the solutions.
Not only was this election a referendum on the policies harming our country, it was also an expansion of the Republican Party. This election cycle a diverse number of Republicans were victorious. Notably, Niki Haley who will be only the second Indian-American Governor, Tim Scott, the first black Republican to represent South Carolina in the U.S. House since Reconstruction and Marco Rubio who will join the Senate’s lone Hispanic member, New Jersey Democrat Bob Menendez. From Senator-elect Kelly Ayotte in New Hampshire to Congresswomen-elect Kristi Noem in North Dakota and Governor-elect Susana Martinez in New Mexico, Republican women continue to show their leadership and vitality within politics, in a year of Republican women.

This has been a busy campaign season for GW College Republicans who campaigned in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and this weekend in Florida for Governor-Elect Rick Scott and Wisconsin for Senator-elect Ron Johnson, not to mention the countless hours members spent working towards electing Republicans from their home states. Tonight, we celebrate their efforts and a truly red November!

Elections for our two new Freshman Representatives will be held tonight, Monday, September 20, in Marvin Center Room 307 from 8pm to 10pm.

You must be a dues paying member of the College Republicans to vote. If you have not paid your membership dues yet, you can do so at the election tonight.

Joe Kamali: I would be honored to become a GW College Republican Freshman Representative this year. I am passionate for my beliefs and for the GOP. I would do anything I could to progress the club’s place in GW. I am dedicated and ready to work the entire year and have an extensive background working in politics and campaigns. To keep it short and simple: I firmly believe I could do the best possible job as your Freshman Representative.

Spencer Fogel: I am a “Common Sense Conservative” seeking your vote! If elected “Freshman Representative,” I will work for you! I will make sure that we go on the best campaign trips to battleground states like Florida. I will see to that we have great guest speakers! Perhaps most important of all, I will see to that we have competitive events with the College Democrats and that we will win these events! If all of these ideas appeal to you, be sure to vote Spencer Fogel for “Freshman Representative!”

Chris Chaney: The force of the Tea Party clashing with the stubbornness of the Old Guard has created a storm of tension within the GOP ranks. I firmly believe that Obama and his cronies can be defeated in these upcoming mid-term elections. Yet, the party must unite to ensure a victory, not only for the party but more importantly for the American people. That unity begins with conservative organizations such as the GW College Republicans. I will advocate relentlessly on behalf of the conservative cause and the GOP; however, above all I seek to remind everyone that our first allegiance ought to be sworn to the
Constitution and the American people, not the party.

Sarah Kovar: My passion for politics began when I organized a middle school Bush/Kerry presidential debate and represented President Bush. In high school I turned to speech and debate competition, winning 11 California State Championship bids, 5 league championships, and 10+ 1st place trophies. I am a proud member of the Beach Cities Republicans Club, a scholarship winner from the Republican Women’s Federation, and a former Congressional Page.As freshman representative, my goal would be to raise campus awareness of the values of the Republican Party. Too often we are seen as simply reacting to the Democrat agenda. We need to get OUR message out that we believe the government’s job is to secure liberty which allows for the pursuit of happiness.

Daniel Mintz: I am running for freshman representative because I believe in the Republican Party and I have seen firsthand the value and importance of College Republicans. Having been a staff member on two campaigns, and a volunteer on many more I have seen how effective CR’s can be. Since then I have been eagerly anticipating the opportunity to become involved with the CR’s at my own school. I would like to bring my experiences networking with Republicans in various positions of political power and working for Republican elected officials and campaigns to the GW CR’s so that we can continue to have excellent speakers, as well as ensure victory in November, and effective, successful campaigns for years to come.

Jonathan Carfagno: My fellow Republicans, I would like to announce my candidacy for the position of Freshmen Representative. I interned for my Republican state legislator and worked on campaigns for several Republican lawmakers, providing the opportunity to participate in clean campaigns that spread the conservative message in the heavily liberal state of New Jersey. One thing I learned is that the minority party can make a difference. I will work to make the College Republicans voice loud, not only at GW but throughout Washington DC. If elected, I will find creative ways to increase membership, provide resources for freshmen and all members, and support the Republican cause. I look forward to working with you and ask for your support for Freshman Representative.

Amelia Wolf: In light of the changing sentiment of the political views of the nation, we, as a body of young Republicans, are posed to be a great force in effecting civic change. I truly believe in the conservative values of the Republican Party and by running for Freshman Representative, I hope to spread the conservative message at GW. I cultivated my leadership abilities in high school-specifically as the editor of my school paper and the president of the Model Congress debate team. I will use these skills as a Freshman Representative to ensure that the voices of the freshman class are heard in the College Republican forum, as well as create events that capture and spread the conservative message.

Chris Wassman: At this critical time in American history, we as Republicans must fight for conservative values – promoting limited government and personal liberty. Working on the Dino Rossi campaign for US Senate in Washington State and as the campaign manager for a Washington State House of Representatives race, from doorbelling and phone calling I know the frustration that people are feeling about the policies and out-of-control spending coming from all levels of government. As a Freshman Representative, I will work to ensure that the GW College Republicans advance conservative ideals on and off campus and work as the leading political force at GW.

Robert Lycke: I believe that a Freshmen Representative of an organization must be able to effectively voice of the opinions of the student organization and ensure that all plans are carried out accordingly. In the original Constitution, representatives were expected to be responsive to the people and reflect the beliefs of those he represents in every decision that he makes. As one of the College Republican Freshman Representatives, I will follow this standard that our Founding Fathers have established for us and our country. And to this end, I plan to actively listen to all ideas and ensure that these opinions are not only taken into account by the executive board, but implemented in the GW community. Vote Rob Lycke!

Erin Mew: I believe that protecting liberty should be any individual’s guiding principle when leading an assembly of people. My position as Freshman Representative would be to personify the message of personal freedom, capitalism, and individualism in a purely political context. I have two main objectives: (1) hold monthly meetings with fellow Republican freshmen, and (2) build a mutual understanding between the Class of 2014 and the Executive Board so that freshman concerns are expressed. My mission as a representative of my peers is to articulate popular ideas in an intellectual way, in addition to heading any initiatives that require my leadership, organization, and dedication. I would be honored to help Republicans take back Congress in November by mobilizing young Republicans at GW.

Kristin Donehower: Leadership: Experience: Enthusiasm for the Republican party: check. Honestly, though, all of the nominees would be great. We’ve all got the credentials, internships, and experience. I was leader of my school’s Political Activism Club. I had an internship with Representative Kate Harper. I watch The O’Reilly Factor and Hannity at least four times a week. Ever since I learned of its existence, I’ve looked forward to joining College Republicans, and now that I’m here, I want to do more. I know I can represent you well, and reflect what you want to the board. I will stand my ground, and I will use this opportunity to its fullest potential. Inevitable campaign speech vocabulary of leadership, potential and you: check.

James Reed: I am proud to announce my candidacy for Freshman Representative of the College Republicans. Over the past four years, I have developed a staunch conservative record of fiscal responsibility and government accountability. Last year, I managed $1,000,000 of my student body’s finances. I ended the year with a 10 percent surplus. I served as Mayor for a Day for my hometown through my local chamber of commerce, a pro-business network. My leadership contributed toward the
adoption of tax cuts for small businesses who bought products made in America. If elected, I hope to promote true American ideals across campus by quelling the radical, liberalism that overruns campus. I’d appreciate your support and God bless.

Elie Litvin: Growing up politically as a Massachusetts Republican is a unique experience. Being the constant underdog inspires the outside the box thinking which is crucial to our party’s success. I have been fortunate to work for leaders in the field of practical politics, such as Rob Willington, the media and microtargeting guru for Scott Brown, who now consults and conducts trainings for some of the
most prominent Republicans in the country. As your Freshman Representative, I will work with the Executive Board to further our organization’s reputation as the powerhouse for College Republicans nationwide, by bringing in speakers like Willington, who will educate our members in the latest innovations – skills which can then be utilized for our targeted candidates.

Miles Adams: My passion for politics began with a ninth grade politics class. Since that time I have been extremely active in Republican causes including campaigning and interning at both the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Congresswoman Michele Bachmann’s Office. Our nation is about to embark on one of the most important elections of the last thirty years. I am confident that we can take back this country and GW College Republicans and especially the freshman students here can play a pivotal role in turning around our country. Having experience working in Congress is definitely a major asset I have because I can help us get top speakers such as Bachmann, fellows from Cato, business leaders, and executives from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
