FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 16, 2010

College Republican Statement on the SCOTUS Nomination of Elena Kagan

Washington, D.C. — The George Washington University College Republicans congratulate Solicitor General Elena Kagan on her nomination to the United States Supreme Court. Her potential seating as the third women on the Court is something all Americans should take great pride in.

We hope that Ms. Kagan can bring an impartial and open mind to the Supreme Court. We also hope that she will rule with independence and abandon the Obama judicial agenda she currently advocates on behalf of and instead opts to provide the American people with an impartial voice on the Court for years to come.

While we commend President Obama on his ability to find a Democrat morally adept enough to be repulsed by partial birth abortion and human cloning, we have serious misgivings about other areas of Elena Kagan’s sparse record. We are greatly disappointed in the disrespect Ms. Kagan has shown our nation’s military during her tenure as Dean of the Harvard Law School. We are saddened that the President chose to replace Justice Stevens, the only justice with an extensive military background, with someone so openly hostile towards the military culture that keeps America free and safe.

Although judicial experience is not a prerequisite for sitting on the Supreme Court, Republicans are weary of the Solicitor General’s lack of legal writing and the fact that she has taken very few policy positions. Especially since one of the few policy positions she has taken is in direct violation of congressional law signed by a President for whom she served.

Republicans will treat Solicitor General Kagan fairly and on the merits of her nomination. We hope for an open-minded, thorough, and straightforward process that focuses on her record and judicial ability, not her personal story or political philosophy.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 28, 2010

Pat Buchanan Event on April 27, 2010

Washington, DC – The George Washington University College Republicans had the
distinct honor of hosting the legendary Patrick J. Buchanan last night in the Elliot School.
A major objective of the organization has been to offer an array of Conservative
perspectives to the student body and Mr. Buchanan’s presence on campus certainly
achieved this goal. Mr. Buchanan, referring to himself as an “anti-war (unless its
necessary) Conservative,” offered the paleoconservative approach to foreign policy to a
crowd of about 80.
Mr. Buchanan was eager to engage with the student audience in noting his observations
of the Tea Party as a re-occurring movement, US-Russian relations as a product of our
own making, and the Arizona Immigration Bill as the result of a gridlocked Congress
and an Executive that weakly enforces federal law.
The event was a testament to the successful transition from the 2009-2010 Executive
Board to the 2010-2011 Executive Board, with the planning of the event coordinated by
the former, while the new Executive Board hosted the evening. Following the event, the
GWCRs helped the College Republican National Committee film a video capturing the
very real impact the deficit has on our generation’s future.
Next semester, the GWCRs look forward to fighting against such fiscal irresponsibility
taking place here in Washington, hosting additional promoted speakers and especially
look forward to turning Mr. Buchanan’s positive predictions for the GOP into reality on
the 2010 campaign trails.

Store4Summer offers summer storage for students who won’t be in DC for the summer and don’t have a place to keep their stuff. They store boxes, couches, desks, chairs – basically, if it isn’t alive, they store it. If you or a roommate or a friend need summer storage you can sign up online at www.Store4Summer.com . If you reference “College Republicans” on the sign up, Store4Summer will donate $5 to our organization. We’re excited about this opportunity and hope you take advantage of it.
