Transparent Executive Session Amendment

Introduced by Wolf, Oman, Frey

Amendment: Allow the board to publish notes from executive session (private decision-making post-eboard meeting)

Executive session is a private session comprised only of executive board members, which can be called by the board in order to make decisions while not in the presence of those who may be affected by these decisions.

Oman: we are responsible to members, they deserve to know what happens in executive session

Hines: Constitutional review; Oman, Wolf: executive session mentioned only once.

- Giving away executive session information is an impeachable offense.

Frey: This does not eliminate the purpose of executive session, it merely allows for disclosure of executive session notes at a later date. It’s necessary for fully informing members… members deserve our honesty

Hines, concurrence by Lofquist, Sadlosky and Meyer: we need private decision-making, non-disclosure of full decision details

Oman: How are we going to be held accountable by members?

Frey: this organization is too top-down.

Wolf: we are primarily responsible to members, not press;

Noel: PR perspective could lead to public divisiveness

Executive Session Transparency Vote:

In Favor: Oman, Frey, Hansen, Wolf

Against: Noel, Hines, Lofquist, Meyer, Fitzsimmons

Motion fails 5-4

Brandon: GSPM event – Ethics of Grassroots Advocacy

Tayler Political satire debate coming up – Greta and Tayler (tay not available, Brandon instead)

CPAC – iron out details on eboard leading trips – Marco Rubio keynote

State of the Union watch party – Wednesday 9pm Marv

Walter Reed – 26 feb

Hugo Scheckter Memorial Karaoke night – look into details, TGIF, Japone, etc.

Dan, Brandon, Will: Theodore Roosevelt island – april

January newsletter articles due Sunday

Jake: finances, new expenditures from March for Life

Will: Bag tax event. Possibly work with District of Columbia GOP

Bulletin board: We’re coming for you, Barack. Post quotes, other Obama lies.

Cynthia, Jake: Order More Shirts

Director reports:

Dan: vouchers, DVD, website

Rob: immigration Debate – work with College Democrats

Alex: 294 members, looking into karaoke, other member events, another football game

***PRESS RELEASE***

UPDATE: College Republicans Withdraw Co-Sponsorship for GW Marriage Equality Week

George Washington University, Washington, DC- The GW College Republicans released the following statement:
The GW College Republicans will not be co-sponsoring Meghan McCain’s visit to GW to deliver the keynote address during “Marriage Equality Week.” Our executive board was originally told by Allied in Pride that Meghan McCain’s primary focus would be her opinion on what it means to be a Republican. But having later discovered through Ms. McCain’s twitter, and subsequent conversations that her remarks would be framed around “Marriage Equality Week,” information that Allied in Pride’s president, Michael Komo, withheld from our board, we have since retracted our support for the event.

Originally, the GW College Republicans had pledged $100 towards the $10,000 honorarium and other associated fees. This amount was also in addition to publicity through our messaging and communication outlets.

Our top priority is to represent our membership and promote the conservative message on campus. Considering what we now know the focus of the Meghan McCain event to be, we feel that our involvement would not be in agreement with either of these priorities.

Ms. McCain’s views on marriage equality align with neither the Republican Party nor her father’s personal stance. Though we fully supported John McCain’s candidacy for President, we feel that Meghan McCain’s last name is not near as important as the message she advocates. Moreover, we offer our best wishes to Ms. McCain, and Allied’s members for a successful event.

CR Movie Night
Nov 22, 7pm Marvin Center Amphitheatre

Showing Taking Chance, starring Kevin Bacon. “Taking Chance” chronicles the real-life story of Lieutenant Colonel Michael Strobl and fallen Marine, Lance Corporal Chance Phelps. When Lieutenant Colonel Michael Strobl comes across the name of the fallen Lance Corporal Chance Phelps, he requests that he accompany the Marine’s body back home. Strobl was so moved by his experience and the outreach of support he received from strangers across the country, that he recorded the journey in his personal journal, which HBO has adapted into “Taking Chance.”

A Message from Chairman Hines

Dear Republicans and friends,

I am calling for a special election, Monday, November 30th, to replace the outgoing Public Relations Director Andrew Clark, who will be going abroad next semester. Location and time will be announced soon.

Interested candidates should go to our website: http://gwrepublicans.org for posted election procedures for the special election. Candidate statements of no more than 200 words are due no later than 5:30PM EST Friday, November 27th to the Fair Election Committee at FEC@gwrepublicans.org.

I encourage all interested and qualified members with a desire to serve our party, to consider running for this important position on the Executive Board. The job description of the Public Relations Director is located in the constitution of our organization, which is also on our website.

Lastly, I pray you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday, and safe travels wherever you might be going. I also hope you remember especially those serving overseas in harms way far from their friends and family who have given so much in support and defense of the greatest nation on earth.

Happy Thanksgiving, and God bless,

Brandon James Hines
Chairman, GW College Republicans
