The GW College Republicans are proud to release the slate of candidates for the 2009 Freshmen Elections! We have some amazing candidates, but you can only vote for two – so be sure to join us (MC Amphitheater) for the Freshmen “Class of 2013″ Elections when we choose for our future leaders!

To vote, you must be a paid member of the College Republicans (class year does not matter). A table will be set up outside the night of the elections for unpaid members or new members to pay their dues so they can vote.

Jacob Thayer

Hi, my name is Jacob Thayer and I am announcing my candidacy for Freshman Representative for the College Republicans. I am strongly committed to conservative principles and want to see a red country again… in other words a prosperous country. I am very committed to the Republican Party and plan on spending much of my time here working with it. I founded and was President of the Young Republicans at my high school and ran for school board for my school district as well. I have been on Student Council since 7th grade and attended Boys State (I was elected to District Judge, one of the highest offices) in Texas. I was also involved in Junior Statesmen and I work with the Harris County Tax Office as a Voter Registrar. I am known at home as a go to guy and always try to help others. I want to represent you in order to further the party and help those around me.”

Michael Russo

I am from Waltham MA, one of the few semi-conservative cities in the state, and I hope to convince you to vote for me as your freshman representative. I have long been an ardent conservative dedicated to the principles of small government, state’s rights, the 2nd amendment, the fairness tax, supporting our military regardless of where we’re at war, controlling our borders, and the traditional American values of our founders and legal immigrant ancestors. I was a founding member of my high school’s Campaign Club and its Vice President. The aim of our club was to promote political awareness amongst fellow students, by handing out flyers on the candidates, holding a mock debate and an election themed bake sale. Here at GW I hope I can be a part of spreading awareness of conservative values to the student population since many may not know what it means to be a true conservative! I would help the Executive Board to the best of my ability with increasing CR membership amongst freshmen and I know many will respond positively if they only heard the truth, and not what the Daily Show says, about Republicans. I am positive that I can make a difference!

Jake Milligan

My fellow Republicans, an infectious tide of liberal progressivism has swept our greatest of nations, and its reach is far and wide. Corruption in the White House and Congress has disheartened many Americans, including myself, and I’m sure you feel similarly. Now, perhaps more than ever, it is up to every day Americans, like you and me, to stand up for justice, for accountability, and for ethical leadership. You may be asking yourself what you can do, but I assure you there has never been a better place to take a stand than where you are right now: The George Washington University in the heart of our nation’s capital. Take the first step: vote for me for Freshman Representative, and I vow to uphold the conservative values that you wish so dearly to be returned to our nation, especially limited government, lower taxes, and accountability. Living in California has given me the experience of being a conservative voice in a liberal place like GW and the experience of winning campaigns in an area infected by progressives. Kevin Doré

Ronald Reagan once said, “Man is not free unless government is limited”. Today in our beloved nation, a nation in which the all-powerful liberal machine is trying to replace a government founded on the great Constitution with an extremely diabolic and oppressive dystopia that will have the ability to control so many aspects of our everyday life, this quote could not be more significant. I find this thought even more relevant being a part of the most involved, passionate, and motivated group of young Republicans that I have ever witnessed. The time is now. It is time to step up and save our nation from an infinite amount of debt that will obliterate any chance our generation has in this world. Let’s push aside the old geezers of the Republican Party that have driven our party into the ground and return to the principles of the party that drove Abraham Lincoln to save the Union. I can be your voice, I can help. I have all of the qualifications necessary for this post, and I will represent the ideals of the GW freshman Republicans and serve in whatever way you want me to. Hugo Scheckter

Even if I don’t sound like the Georgia Boy I am, I am proud to have a mixed American and British heritage, and I am also proud to be running for election to the E board of officially the most active College Republicans chapter in the country.

About myself, I moved from Georgia to the UK in 1996, and have studied both the US and UK political models with great detail, and have experience trying to promote the conservative values in a liberal setting, being the ONLY republican in my entire high school. I was head of the political speakers club, in which I managed to attract our local representative to the European Parliament as well the heads of various interest groups.

I have extensive leadership experience, being the youngest coach in my school’s 400 year history, as well as being on the board of a company I started at school as Operations Director, which turned over thousands of pounds in its first year. I was also selected as a school ambassador, and on the board of my boarding house.

I will work tirelessly to continue the excellent work of the CR’s, and it would be an honor representing you.

Calvin Moore

As a fellow student, I understand the constant struggle to be a conservative amongst today’s overwhelming liberal college campuses; however, as Freshman Representative, I will work tirelessly to ensure we are doing all we can to unite our fellow conservatives as well as welcoming the non-conservatives who, like you and I, are simply students that share the values of liberty, freedom, and personal responsibility. I promise to work hard to make our presence on campus one of the strongest and to ensure that we are constantly fighting back and supporting our views in the most informed, intelligent manner possible. I promise to work to ensure that we constantly have prominent voices of conservatism to speak on campus, to ensure that we always have events for us to get involved, and, most of all, to ensure that we have a solid, united CR family to support each other and to give each other the tools needed to fight the liberalism that prevails all too often. As a former leader in my school, as well as having recently completed a congressional internship, I have the experience and the passion needed to make sure that CR’s are as best as they can be.

Alex Northover

Born and raised in Atlanta Georgia, I have always been a republican at heart. I have rallied at tea parties, campaigned for republican senators and started a young republican organization in my hometown. But why should you vote for Alex Northover for freshman rep? As my only extracurricular activity, I promise to devote all of my available time to the CR’s cause. I promise to conduct myself in the best interests of our organization through ethical leadership. Most importantly, I will proactively strive to make the position of freshman rep more than a superficial one. Dan Horning

I am seeking to become the GW College Republicans freshmen representative to help promote the conservative ideals of the Republican Party on campus, and to help students get more interested in the political world that they live in. I have been very active in volunteer organizations at home and in high school. I am an Eagle Scout, volunteer at my parish, and former President of three clubs at my high schools. I have also volunteered for my state representative and the McCain Presidential campaign. As Freshmen Representative, I will lead a major membership drive in our freshmen class, aiming to double freshmen membership. I want to target groups that traditionally do not vote along conservative lines, such as the African-American, Hispanic, and Jewish communities. I hope to set up major fundraising efforts to help us outspend the College Democrats, as well as promote the conservative message on campus. I will also work with the College Democrats so as to open up a dialogue and work with them where we can work together, and show them the way where they are misguided. Sinead Casey

I am a Conservative, from Liberal New York. As Freshman Representative, I would like to see College Republicans, bring in the best speakers and resources to enhance our party knowledge and keep ourselves informed. We need to engage in open, honest debate with the Democrats, but more importantly I think it’s up to us to lay the foundation of bipartisanship by working with College Democrats to find practicable and applicable solutions to the most pressing issues for our generation such as the energy crisis and job creation.
Our peers call themselves “Liberal” because they don’t know what it means to be Conservative. Blame it on the media or a successful campaign but I think it has a lot to do with a closed minded generational partisan entrenched deep within the party itself. But the greater GOP is beginning to realize something we’ve already figured out, WE are the Party. If elected, I want to prove to the thousands of students on this campus that the Republican Party isn’t their grandparents party anymore, its ours. The saying goes you’re liberal when your young, conservative when you finally grow up, well we got it right the first time, lets prove why.

Christopher Oman

Hello, my name is Christopher Oman and I am announcing candidacy for freshmen representative of the George Washington College Republicans. I was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. I grew up in a conservative family, where I watched my father serve as the chief of staff for two governors, and run for governor of Iowa himself. Republican politics has been in my blood for as long as I can remember. Thus, I have been active in numerous campaigns over the years. In 2004, I was three-time volunteer of the week for the Bush-Cheney/Stan Thompson (Congress) campaigns in my district. I volunteered for the Mitt Romney campaign during the Iowa Caucus, and was the official ballot counter for my precinct’s Republican Caucus. I also dedicated countless to the McCain-Palin campaign last fall. I also participated in high school debate nationally for the last three years and have developed the necessary speaking and leadership qualities needed to serve as freshmen representative. I have numerous ideas on how to expand our membership, and deliver our message throughout the entire campus. I am eager to lead and I ask for your support. Thank you!

Eva Hansen

I am running for Freshman Representative because, like so many of you, I am passionate about conservatism and its values. Growing up in liberal California, my views were constantly challenged by teachers, peers, and coworkers. This constant questioning and challenging only served to strengthen my conviction that the conservative values of personal, fiscal, and moral responsibility are ones to live by.
Not only do I have a great deal of passion for conservatism, but I also have the leadership experience required to be a successful representative. As managing editor of my high school’s newspaper, I successfully recruited and managed a large group of staff writers, organized class events, and created high editorial standards. This leadership position, as well as others, helped mold me into a responsible individual who will successfully represent the freshman Republicans.
My dedication to Republican ideals has instilled in me a determination to spread the conservative message at George Washington University. As a Freshman Representative, I will ensure that all freshmen have plenty of opportunities to get involved in the Republican cause. I will also seek opinions and advice from you, the freshman Republicans, to ensure you get the most out of your GW College Republican experience.

Victor Bogachev

Born and raised in Moscow, Russia I have felt the oppression of personal freedoms and free market from a very early age. My father, ex-President of the Conservative party of Russia and a true supporter of capitalism sent me to study in America, away from the totalitarian regime that was rapidly growing in Russia. Upon my arrival in the United States I have quickly aligned myself with the true Republican ideals and became heavily involved in Young Republicans club on campus. Due to my continuous hard work and commitment to the Young Republicans club, I became the youngest President of the club in 50 years as a junior and the first international President in club’s history. In my two years as President I was able to make YR the largest club on campus, hold multiple events, and organize trips to such places as DC and New York for constant members. I plan to continue my hard work as a member of the best CR chapter in the nation and am sure that my experience will allow me to dive right into work on the board and strive to make this the best year yet.
